Mental health problems in pregnancy and following childbirth are treatable

Welcome to the
GLOBAL ALLIANCE FOR
MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH

Mother and daughter

The Global Alliance for Maternal Mental Health (GAMMH) is a coalition of international organizations and national alliances committed to improving the mental health and well-being of women and their children during pregnancy and the first year after childbirth (the perinatal period). With a particular focus on least-developed countries, GAMMH works to address the unique challenges faced by women in low-resource settings, where access to mental health care is often limited or nonexistent.

Worldwide, maternal depression is the most common serious health complication of maternity. This and other mental health problems in pregnancy and postnatally result in huge human and economic costs for this generation and the next – yet they are a neglected area of investment in services and research.

GAMMH’s goal is to prevent the avoidable suffering experienced by women and their families, ensuring child development does not continue to be compromised by a global failure to provide appropriate prevention support and services for mothers’ mental health.

Mental health problems in pregnancy and following childbirth are roughly twice as common in least developed countries as they are in highly developed countries.  If the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are to be achieved by 2030, maternal mental health must be prioritised.
